What is Positive Behaviour Support?

What is behaviour support?

Behaviour support is an evidence-based approach designed to assist individuals who may sometimes display behaviours of concern, which can act as barriers to achieving their goals. At Rubix Therapy, we believe behaviour support is more than just addressing behaviours—it's about improving quality of life and fostering positive change.

Key principles of our approach include:

  • Values-Led Practice: Rooted in respect, dignity, and inclusion.
  • Focus on Quality of Life: Prioritising meaningful improvements in daily living.
  • Inclusivity: Actively involving participants and their support networks.
  • Functional Analysis: Understanding the purpose behind behaviours to guide intervention.
  • Systems-Focused: Considering the broader environment and support systems.
  • Proactive Interventions: Addressing ecological and antecedent factors to prevent behaviours.
  • Skill Development: Teaching new skills to enhance competence and independence.
  • Developmentally Appropriate: Tailoring strategies to each individual's age and needs.
  • Positive Outcomes: A reduction in challenging behaviours as a natural result of effective intervention.
  • Multi-Component Approach: Utilising a variety of strategies to achieve long-term results.
  • Non-Punitive Practices: Avoiding punitive measures in favour of supportive methods.
  • Distinction Between Proactive and Reactive Approaches: Focusing on prevention while preparing for immediate responses when needed.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Working closely with all those involved in the individual’s life.

Behaviour support is a proactive, person-centred, and long-term approach that empowers individuals to develop more appropriate behaviours, achieve their goals, and thrive.

What behaviour support is not

Behaviour support is not:

  • Counselling or psychology
  • Support coordination or case management
  • Applied Behaviour Analysis
  • Transport services
  • A straight line

How can a Behaviour Support Practitioner help you?

A Behaviour Support Practitioner works alongside individuals, their families, and support networks to create tailored strategies that address behaviours of concern and promote a better quality of life.

We can help by:

  • Understanding Behaviour: We conduct comprehensive assessments to identify the reasons behind behaviours and how they impact daily life.
  • Developing Personalised Plans: Our team creates Positive Behaviour Support Plans that focus on proactive, non-restrictive strategies tailored to your unique needs.
  • Teaching New Skills: We help you develop practical skills to enhance communication, independence, and self-regulation.
  • Improving Quality of Life: Our support is centred on achieving meaningful outcomes that empower you to reach your goals and build positive relationships.
  • Providing Ongoing Support: We work closely with you and your support network, offering guidance and regular reviews to ensure your progress stays on track.
  • Reducing Restrictive Practices: Our goal is to reduce or eliminate restrictive practices, focusing instead on creating safe, supportive environments.

At Rubix Therapy, our Behaviour Support Practitioners are here to support you every step of the way, helping you to overcome challenges and build a life filled with opportunities and achievements.

What is the process?

Behaviour support must be provided by an NDIS registered provider who is registered to provide specialist behaviour support services.

At Rubix Therapy, we follow a clear and collaborative process to deliver effective behaviour support tailored to your needs:

  1. Initial Consultation
We begin with an initial meeting to understand your goals, challenges, and support needs. This is also an opportunity to get to know you and build a trusting relationship.
  2. Comprehensive Assessment
Our practitioner conducts a detailed Functional Behaviour Assessment (FBA) to identify the factors influencing behaviours of concern. This includes gathering information from you, your support network, and relevant stakeholders.
  3. Developing a Positive Behaviour Support Plan
Based on the assessment, we create a personalised Positive Behaviour Support Plan (PBSP). The plan includes proactive strategies, skill-building opportunities, and recommendations for improving quality of life while addressing behaviours of concern.
  4. Implementation
We work with you and your support network to put the PBSP into action. Our team provides guidance, resources, and training to ensure everyone is confident in using the strategies outlined in the plan.
  5. Monitoring and Review
Behaviour support is an ongoing process. We regularly review the PBSP to track progress, make adjustments as needed, and celebrate achievements. This ensures the plan remains effective and aligned with your goals.
  6. Continued Collaboration
Our support doesn’t stop at the plan. We remain available to provide advice, training, and encouragement as you work towards your goals.

At every stage, we prioritise your voice and involve your support network to create a holistic, inclusive approach. Our process is flexible, empowering, and focused on achieving meaningful outcomes for you.
